Most fertile days to get pregnant

The Calendar Method of knowing your menstrual cycle

A woman’s menstrual cycle begins from the first day she sees her period to the 1st day of she sees the next period. Like I mentioned earlier, that is an average of 28 to 32 days for most women.

Counting from the 1st day of seeing the period, some women can ovulate between the 11th to the 21st day of the menstrual cycle. These days are referred to as the fertility window.

Take note of the first day you saw your period (day 1). Then note the first day of you observe the next period. Count how many days you have between the first days of each period. You should take note of at least 6 cycles to get an accurate result.

Let me give you a practical illustration with the table below:

First Days of Seeing the Period Number of Days in Cycle
Jan 1
Jan 30 29 days
Feb 29 29 days
Mar 29 29 days
April 27 29 days
May 23 26 days
June 21 28 days
July 21 30 days

To know the first fertile day you can get pregnant:

  • Find the shortest cycle in you recorded. Subtract 18

For example: if your shortest cycle is 26 days long, subtract 18 from 26 — you get 8. Then, count 8 days starting from day 1 (the first day of your period). If day 1 was on the 1st of the month, day 8 is your first fertile day of this cycle

To know the last fertile day in your current cycle:

  • Find the longest cycle in your record. Subtract 11

For example, if your longest cycle is 30 days long, subtract 11 from 30 — you’ll get 19. Then, count 19 days starting from day 1. If day 1 was on the 1st of the month,  day 19 is your last fertile day of this cycle.

This method only shows what days are most likely your fertile days. It may not be always 100% exact. It’s more difficult to use if your cycles are not always the same length. It won’t work at all if all of your cycles are less than 27 days.

Depending on the length of your menstrual cycle, your most fertile days to get pregnant are as follows:

Length of menstrual Cycle Most fertile days to get pregnant counting from the first day you see your period.
27 days Days 8 through 13 of the cycle
28 days Days 9 through 14 of the cycle
29 days Days 10 through 15 of the cycle
30 days Days 11 through 16 of the cycle
31 days Days 12 through 17 of the cycle
32 days Days 13 through 18 of the cycle
33 days Days 14 through 19 of the cycle
34 days Days 15 through 20 of the cycle
35 days Days 16 through 21 of the cycle

Ovulation typically takes place 14 days before your next period begins. Therefore, using the menstrual calendar shown below, ovulation will take place at about the 16th day provided that your cycle is not shorter than 27 days.

This calendar method like I said, can be used to TRACK OVULATION DAYS. But using it to track your ovulation is enhanced by combining it with the basal body temperature and cervical mucus methods.

  • The basal body temperature method of knowing you ovulation date

First and foremost, your basal body temperature is your temperature when you’re fully at rest. Ovulation causes slight increases to your basal body temperature. You’ll be most fertile during the two to three days before your temperature rises. By tracking your basal body temperature each day, you may be able to predict when you’ll ovulate in subsequent months. This will help you to know when you are most likely to get pregnant.

  • Cervical mucus methods for knowing you ovulation date.

As you are about to ovulate, the mucus that secretes from your vagina becomes clear and stretchy. It will become more like the white part of a raw egg. This egg white cervical mucus that secrets during your fertile window increases your chances of getting pregnant. If you do notice this secretion, you can more easily identify your most fertile days to get pregnant.

You can also purchase an ovulation prediction kit. Using it will help you determine your most fertile days without all these calculations.

Can a girl see her period twice a month?

Yes of course. If your cycle is less than 28 days (for example 27 days), and you see your period on the 1st of the month, the next period will be on the 27th of the same month.
