How do pregnancy test strips work?

Pregnancy test strips measure a hormone called the hCG (human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in your urine. Whereas a laboratory test using a sample of your blood gives better detail about pregnancy, a pregnancy test strip’s results are either positive or negative.

Can you detect a pregnancy at 1 week?

Pregnancy test strips can be used as from about 5 days before your period is supposed to show up. However, the tests are most reliable from the very day you expect to see your period.

What time of the day should you use a pregnancy test strip?

You can use pregnancy test strips at any time of the day. But, testing first thing in the morning is preferable.

How much does a pregnancy strip cost?

The prices range from $1 to about $20 for a single pregnancy test strip. Multiple packs of test strips are also available for a few dollars to about $30. The cost don’t necessarily imply accuracy.

How to use a pregnancy test strip

  • Urinate into a clean, dry plastic or glass cup or container.
  • Remove the pregnancy test strip device from its packet.
  • Hold the test strip at the colored end. (Avoid touching the arrow end and the middle part of the strip).
  • Vertically, deep the end of the test strip (with arrows) into the urine.
  • Make sure not to deep it past the MAX line.
  • Take the pregnancy test strip out when the urine has moved to the test window (The part of the strip that is inside the urine should be there for at least 5 seconds ).
  • Lay the test strip (MAX side facing up) flat on a dry, non-absorbent place.

How to read the result

  • You need 10 minutes to get the result.
  • You cannot rely on the result after 30 minutes.
  • The color of the line is not important.
  • If only 1 colored line appears being the control line, the test is negative and you are not pregnant.
  • If 2 colored lines appear, (both the control line and the testing line) the test is positive and you are pregnant. Even if the lines are very light in                                                             color, you can still assume you are pregnant.
  • If the control line does not appear, the test is invalid.

What actions to take based on the result

  • Invalid results may mean that the test strip was not well saturated in urine.
  • Then you should re-dip another pregnancy test strip for at least 5 seconds and wait 10 minutes to read results.
  • If there is still no control line, you should retest the following day.
  • Though negative results usually mean that you are not pregnant, they can mean that the test was either taken too early to detect the pregnancy, or that it was not done correctly.
  • If the result is positive, make an appointment to see a doctor.
  • If the result is negative, but you still have the signs and symptoms of pregnancy, test again after a week or better still, do a blood test.
